Biting a Pig

Since leaving Georgia, nothing has taken me back save a special lady. Recently, however, I've been thinking about the place where I grew up. Well, about eight hours south of where I grew up—Savannah. Somehow seeing azaleas blossoming this week had me thinking about Savannah and its historic townhouses, which were featured in the film Midnight of Good and Evil. I'd gone to Savannah out of duty, for a music competition. But as soon as it was over, I'd dropped my instrument to walk along the river. There happened to be a food festival at the time and I still remember biting into the only pig-in-the-blanket I'd ever enjoyed. I had gotten it at the Spanky's Bar & Grill booth, which specializes in low-country cooking. The “blanket” was a flaky and buttery pastry shell wrapped around the “pig" , a perfectly chargrilled sausage. Then all this was dipped into their own powerfully mixed spicy mustard. The year was 1985.
