Airlines Add More Nonstop Flights
Good news this morning in the NYTimes Business section. According to Micheline Maynard's "In Airline Shift, More Nonstop Flights Make Schedule" it's not just a promise; the biggies are already scheduling nonstops where only days ago travelers would have been condemned to the hub-transfer system.
"Already, major airlines have added 134 nonstop routes in the last year, and flights promise to be cheaper than they have been in the past."
Bending to the pressure of short haul carriers who've been competing with nonstops and great prices, the shift could feasibly have far broader implications than just improving the quality of in-country travel. It should have positive effects on the price point as well, since the major airlines will be obligated to lower their fares in an effort to be competitive with the the short haul carriers. It's tough to know how long they'll be able to afford this, so I'm going to start buying up tickets!
