Squaw Valley and Tahoe Donner

After a longer than necessary but far more beautiful than anticipated drive from Sacramento to Truckee, California on yesterday, we arrived at our comfortable chalet in Tahoe Donner. Off to The Lodge for drinks and dinner. This morning we bundled ourselves into our warmest, dryest ski gear and headed off to Squaw Valley despite the whistling wind and horizontal sleet. We tucked inside with friends to wait out the worst of the weather. Many of the upper lifts were closed due to wind, but the weatherman had promised a clearing mid-day with a beautiful afternoon. The morning came and went with no improvement, so we headed off to Le Chamois for a beer and pizza lunch. Not healthy, perhaps, but good comfort food after a morning in the chilly drizzle. Still no sign of clearing when we emerged from lunch, so we decided to head back to our digs in Tahoe Donner. As unlikely as it might seem, by the time we'd arrived "at home" the sky had cleared, the sun had come out, the wind had diminished, and our spirits soared! We decided to head off to the local ski hill and enjoy the afternoon. It was the perfect way to warm up for more challenging skiing at Squaw Valley. This evening was the big event, the wedding reception for one of my wife's best friends. A splendid party in a handsome home amongst great new and old friends.
