The Village at Squaw Valley

What a day in spectacular Squaw Valley! Plenty of super challenging runs in the middle of breathtaking views. Add in an excellent skiier to challenge me, and this was one memorable day. Unfortunately no photos because the camera seems to have disappeared, no doubt buried in one of our bags during the move over to The Village at Squaw Valley where we'll be spending the next few nights (until we head off to Benicia to catch up with friends that live on a sailboat.) Play the audio post below for a sound clip of our day.

Squaw Valley Skiing: Day and Night

Today was "move out" day for our housemates who'd come out to Tahoe for Chris and Paul's wedding, but needed to fly back to Colorado for work and "real life". We're staying on through Thursday and don't need to move over to our new on-hill accommodations until tomorrow, so we said our good-byes and headed off to Squaw Valley for a glorious afternoon of skiing under bluebird skies.

Squaw Valley and Tahoe Donner

After a longer than necessary but far more beautiful than anticipated drive from Sacramento to Truckee, California on yesterday, we arrived at our comfortable chalet in Tahoe Donner. Off to The Lodge for drinks and dinner. This morning we bundled ourselves into our warmest, dryest ski gear and headed off to Squaw Valley despite the whistling wind and horizontal sleet. We tucked inside with friends to wait out the worst of the weather. Many of the upper lifts were closed due to wind, but the weatherman had promised a clearing mid-day with a beautiful afternoon.

San Francisco: Embarcadero Waterfront

Julio and Susan jumpstart their appetites.Good bye, NYC. Hello San Francisco! We flew out yesterday for a ten day jaunt on the other coast. My savvy wife jiggled and nudged our Continental coach tickets into better flight conditions than the First/Business class. Well, all except for the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies they served them just prior to arriving at SFO. We had a bulkhead row to ourselves with enough room stretch out and enjoy the flight.

Hotels in Prague?

We recently received an email from a website called Accommodation in Prague : Hotels in Prague asking us to list them in our travel directory. Pretty basic resource, but it seems to cover the basics, so I've added them. And then I decided to see what sort of options we already offer for traveling in Prague. The answer? Lots!

Thailand: Winter in the Tropics

By Carson Christiano - Winter has descended on Chiang Mai. You wouldn't know it save for the hats, scarves, jackets, and knitting needles that have made their way into my classrooms, the complaints from teachers and students that they are getting sick, and the questioning looks I get when I show up to work in short sleeves. The weather is an excuse for everything from tardiness to falling asleep in class to unfinished homework. This morning was admittedly cool, a brisk 57 degrees with a biting southeast wind, but by midday it was brilliantly sunny, around 80, with a gentle breeze wafting through the windows of the English department. If these temperatures are driving the Thai people into hibernation, I hate to think what the summer months here are like.

Adventures in Travel Expo Debriefing

The New York City Adventures in Travel Expo has ended, and I'm feeling supercharged with travel ideas. It's been an immensely informative experience, meeting hundreds of travel operators, travel writers and travelers who've flocked to the Javits Center like moths to a lightbulb. What inspirational stories I've heard! Click the links below to hear my reactions to day two of the Adventures in Travel Expo, and in particular, seminars hosted by Costas Christ, Marybeth Bond and Alexander Souri.

What's Hot in Adventure Travel?

What a day! I wrapped up with a meta-seminar called "What's Hot in Adventure Travel?" featuring four destinations, each presented by different representatives. Greece: Colleen McGuire, CycleGreece Bhutan: Dr.

Responsible Tourism Comes of Age

Just a quick posting, no audio this time since I'm still in the seminar room. This was an exciting if slightly unfocused seminar that's reignited all that makes me passionate about this wonderful world of wandering. Wandering with a consciouns! We heard from Costas Christ, who is the CEO of the Bar Harbor, Maine Chamber of Commerce and the president of Adventure Council. He acted as moderator and "macro-view" facilitator, helping us understand the idea of "responsible tourism". Next we heard from Tensie Whelan, the president of Rainforest Alliance.

Gutsy Traveler Marybeth Bond

I've just exited an excellent seminar with Marybeth Bond, travel author and Adventure Editor for TravelGirl Magazine. Listen to my reaction to her seminar:
